Winter Mower Maintenance Checklist for Lifestyle Blocks
16 May 2025
1. Clean Your Mower Thoroughly
First things first, give your mower a good clean. Remove all grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the deck, engine, and wheels. A build-up of old grass can hold moisture, leading to rust and corrosion, then it can dry out and cause a fire risk if left in place when using the mower again in the future.
Start with a leaf blower, then use a brush or a hose for a more thorough clean; just be careful around electrical components, and ensure the mower is fully cooled before spraying cold water on it. For stubborn grime, a pressure washer can be effective but keep the spray away from bearings and seals. Be sure to check your owner’s manual on whether or not a pressure washer is suitable.
2. Stabilise the Fuel or Run the Tank Dry
Fuel left in the tank over winter can go stale, causing starting issues and potential damage to the fuel system. You have two options:
- Fuel Stabiliser: Add a reputable fuel stabiliser like STA-BIL® Fuel Stabilizer to the tank, then run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabiliser circulates through the entire fuel system. This keeps the fuel fresh and prevents gumming.
- Run Dry: If you prefer not to use a stabiliser, run the mower until it completely runs out of fuel. This ensures there's no old fuel left to cause problems.
3. Change the Oil and Filter
Changing the oil before winter is better than waiting until spring. Old oil can contain contaminants that can corrode engine components over time. Refer to your mower's manual for the correct oil type and filter. Dispose of the old oil responsibly.

4. Inspect and Clean/Replace the Air Filter
A clean air filter is vital for engine performance. Remove the air filter and inspect it. If it's dirty, clean it according to your manual's instructions (some are washable, others need replacing). If it's torn or heavily clogged, replace it.
5. Check and Clean/Replace the Spark Plug
Remove the spark plug and inspect it for signs of wear or carbon build-up. Clean any deposits with a wire brush. If the electrode is worn or damaged, replace the plug. Ensure the gap is set correctly as per your manual.
6. Sharpen or Replace Blades
Dull blades tear grass, leaving your lawn looking ragged and making the mower work harder. Remove the blades and either sharpen them yourself (if you have the right tools and expertise) or take them to your nearest service point or OMC. If the blades are bent, cracked, or severely worn, replace them. While the blades are off, inspect the blade spindle for any play or damage.
7. Lubricate Moving Parts
Apply grease to all grease fittings and lubricate moving parts like cables, pivots, and wheel bearings. This prevents rust and ensures smooth operation next season. Check your manual for specific lubrication points.
8. Inspect Belts and Pulleys
Check all belts for cracks, fraying, or wear. Ensure they have the correct tension. Inspect pulleys for any damage or excessive wear. Replace any damaged belts.
9. Check Tyre Pressure
Check the tyre pressure and inflate them to the recommended levels. Proper tyre pressure helps maintain stability and even cutting.
10. Keep the battery charged
It’s a good idea to give the battery a top-up during the quiet winter months. Batteries left connected, but not used, can discharge slowly and if the voltage drops too low, this may result in the battery not being chargeable in springtime. So, set a reminder to give the battery a charge (or run the mower up for an hour or so) at intervals throughout the winter if you’re not using the mower.
11. Store Your Mower Properly
Once all maintenance is done, store your mower in a clean, dry, and sheltered location. A garage or shed is ideal. If storing outdoors, cover it with a breathable, waterproof cover to protect it from the elements.
By following this winter maintenance checklist, your lifestyle block mower will be in top condition and ready to tackle the first cut of spring without a hitch. It's a bit of effort now that saves you time and hassle later.
